336: Christmas was celebrated for the first time in Rome.
1763: Suraj Mal Jat, Maharaja of Bharatpur, was killed by Najib-ud -Daulah s troops.
1771: Shah Alam II sat on the Throne of Dehli. Marathas captured Delhi and induced Shah Alam to return to Delhi after an absence of 18 years from the captial.
1861: Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, freedom fighter and founder of Banaras Hindu University, was born at Allahabad.
1892: Swami Vivekananda meditated for three days on a rock in the middle of the sea at Kanyakumari.
1921: Mass boycott greets the Prince of Wales when he arrives in Calcutta.
1924: First All India Communist Conference held in Kanpur.
1927: B R Ambedkar burnt Manusmrti in a bonfire as a protest against the caste system.
1932: King George V’s chair collapsed during his Christmas dinner speech.
1943: Japanese bombers raid Chittagong.
1946: Gandhiji said, at Noakhali, “I am being tested through and through”.
1947: China adopted the constitution.
1964: Indian Ocean hurricane kills 4,000 in Ceylon, 3,000 in Indian province of Madras.
1969: India all out for 163 at Madras vs Australia, Ashley Mallett takes 5-91.
1974: Indian Aeroplane Jumbo 747 was hijacked and taken over to Rome.
1976: INS Vijaydurg, an Indian warship, joined the Indian Navy.
1979: Opening day of Fourth Test Cricket, India 8-112 v Pakistan at Kanpur.
1990: First successful trial of the World Wide Web (www).
1991: Ajit Singh expelled from the JD.
1994: Giani Zail Singh, former President of India, died in Chandigarh at the age of 78.
1995: First major multi-organ transplant in the country performed in Apollo Hospital in Madras.
1997: India-Sri Lanka one-day cricket match at Indore abandoned after three overs owing to a bad state of the pitch, which was a rare occurance.
1999: An Indian Airlines aircraft with 187 passengers on board is hijacked. The plane was going from Katmandu to New Delhi. It lands near Abu Dhabi after several hops.
2000: A. B. Vajpayee, Prime Minister, launches a Rs.60,000 crore ”Gram Sadak Yojana” for linking all villages and the “Antyodaya Anna Scheme” for providing cheap foodgrains under the TPDS.
2008: One of 11 payloaders of India’s Chandrayaan-1 launched into space sent a new picture of the moon.

1878: Louis-Joseph Chevrolet, a Swiss-American race car driver, and co-founder of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company.
1879: Sadhu T.L. Vaswani (1879-1966), altruistic Sindhi poet and servant of God, who found several Hindu missions in India and seven Mira Educational Institutions in his lifetime, was born.
1880: Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, an Indian nationalist and political leader, and former president of the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League during the Indian Independence Movement.
1889: Pandurangi Kodanda Rao, journalist, Hindi writer and social worker, was born in Visakhapatnam, A.P.

1918: Zaib-un-Nissa Hamidullah, a Pakistani writer and journalist.
1918: Anwar Sadat, an Egyptian politician, and the third President of Egypt.
1919: Naushad Ali, an Indian music director for Hindi films.

1924: Atal Bihari Vajpayee, an Indian statesman, and 10th Prime Minister of India.
1926: Begum Para, an Indian Hindi film actress.
1926: Dharmavir Bharti, journalist and editor of Dharmyug, was born. His famous books are “Gunahon Ka Devta” and “Suraj Ka Satwa Ghoda”.
1927: Ram Narayan, an Indian musician, and Sarangi player.
1936: Ismail Merchant, Indian-English director and producer (d. 2005)
1937: Pitambar Datt Kaushika, great educationist, was born at Bulandshahar.
1949: Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister of Pakistan.
1959: Ramdas Athawale, an Indian politician.
1964: Anil Kaul, Canadian badminton player (Olympics-96), was born in Amritsar, India.
1965: Swami Ramdev Baba, an Indian yoga guru known for his work in Ayurveda, business, and agriculture.
1974: Nagma, an Indian politician and former actress.

1972: C. Rajagopalachari, an Indian politician, independence activist, lawyer, writer, historian, and the last governor-general of India.
1977: Charlie Chaplin, an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer.
