1852: The University of Sydney, Australia was established.
1968: NASA launched Apollo 7, the first successful manned Apollo mission.
1987: India’s Peace Army launched Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka. The campaign was waged to liberate Jaffna by ending the LTTE occupation. Start of Operation Pawan by Indian forces in Sri Lanka. Thousands of civilians, insurgents, soldiers die.
2000: NASA launched STS-92, the 100th Space Shuttle mission.
2001: V. S. Naipaul awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
2001: Polaroid Corporation declared bankruptcy.

1876: Charuchandra Bandopadhyay, Bengali novelist and short story writer.
1884: Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, an American political figure, diplomat and activist.
1894: Sudhirranjan Das, former Chief Justice of Supreme Court, was born.
1902: Loknayak Jayprakash Harsudayal Narayan, veteran socialist leader, was born at Sitabdiara village (border of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) in Bihar. He was awarded Bharat Ratna on Dec. 23, 1998 and played a key role in formation of Janta Party which defeated Indian National Congress for the first time.
1916: (Chandikadas Amritrao) Nanaji Deshmukh, Padma Vibhushan, Indian social reformer.
1923: Harish Chandra was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His work in a narrow branch of modern mathematics led to its developement to such an extent that it drew the attention of mathematicians all over the world.
1927: Sarojini Regani, great journalist, was born at Secunderabad.
1930: Behram Contractor, also known as Busybee, Indian journalist, and columnist.
1932: Suresh Dalal, Sahitya Akademi Award-winning Indian-Gujarati poet, writer, and editor.
1942: Amitabh Bachchan, Indian film actor, producer, television host, and former politician
1946: Vijay Bhatkar, Indian scientist, the creator and founder of Param Supercomputer and C-DAC.
1967: Altaf Raja, Indian Qawwali Singer.
1972: Sanjay Banger, Indian cricketer, and coach.
1993: Hardik Pandya, Indian cricketer
Death/ Death Anniversary
1809: Meriwether Lewis, an American explorer, soldier, politician, and public administrator.
1889: James Prescott Joule, a British physicist who proposed the theory of energy transition.
1938: Baji Rout, the youngest Indian freedom fighter and martyr.
1968: Manik Bandoji Ingle (Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj) took Samadhi at Gurukunj Ashram, Amravati. He was involved in social reforms in rural regions of Maharashtra and started many development programs, including construction of roads. He also wrote GramGeeta which describes means for village development. He had also attended a World Religions and World Peace Conference in Japan. Nagpur University is renamed as “Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University” in his honor.

1996: William Spencer Vickrey, Canadian-born professor of economics, and Nobel Laureate.
1997: Vipul Kanti Saha, internationally renowned sculptor.
2000: Donald Dewar, Scotland’s first minister.
2007: Chinmoy Kumar Ghosh (Shri Chinmoy), Indian spiritual guru.
2019: Robert Forster, an American actor.
2019: Alexei Leonov, Soviet/Russian cosmonaut, and the first human to conduct a spacewalk.
