1026: A. A. Milne’s book Winnie the Pooh was published for children.
1882: Punjab University started in India (now West Pakistan).
1910: Further unrest took place in Lhasa, Tibet, following the arrest of Dalai Lama’s agent by the Chinese on the Chinese frontier with India.
1912: Former US President Theodore Roosevelt was attempted to assassinate a man named John Crank.
1920: Oxford University admitted women to degree courses.
1930: The Flag of Freedom’ or ‘Swaraj Toran’ a feature film produced by Prabhat Film Co.Kolhapur was prohibited by the Censor Board on October 14, 1930 on the grounds that it was objectionable in the existing political situation. The film, however, was cleared only after deleting certain portions and the title changed to ‘Udaykal’.
1947: Pilot Charles Yager made the first successful flight from the X-1 at a speed faster than sound.
1956: Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, along with about 380,000 followers, converted to Buddhism at Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur.
1964: On this day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded at the age of 35 for running a non-violent movement against apartheid in American society. Born in the US state of Georgia, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
1981: Vice President Hosni Mubarak was elected President of Egypt.
1982: US President Ronald Reagan declared war on drugs.
1985: Assam Ganparishad established.
1989: Election Commission accepted Shiv Sena as a political party.
1998: Prof. Amartya Sen (Indian Nobel Laureates), the economist-philosopher, awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for his contribution to welfare economics. He became the sixth Indian, by birth or citizenship, to win a Nobel.
1999: Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) was rejected in the US Senate.

1927: Roger Moore, an English actor, best known for his role as James Bond.
1931: Pandit Nikhil Ranjan Banerjee, an Indian classical sitarist of the Maihar Gharana.
1939: Ralph Lauren, American fashion designer-founder of the Ralph Lauren Corporation.
1940: Cliff Richard, an Indian singer-songwriter and actor.
1958: Shahid Shahid Pervez, an Indian sitar player from the Etawah Gharana.
