Staff Selection Commission (SSC) was constituted in 1975 as Subordinate Services Commission, which was renamed from the 26th September, 1977. The commission makes recruitment to various Class III (now Group “C”) (non-technical) posts in the various Ministries / Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices. At present, there are seven Regional Offices at Allahabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Bangalore and two Sub-Regional Offices at Raipur and Chandigarh. The Estimates Committee of the Parliament, in its 47th Report (1967-68), recommended the setting up of a Service Selection Commission for conducting examinations for recruitment to lower categories of posts. The functions of the Staff Selection Commission were redefined by the Government of India, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions

The Staff Selection commission (SSC) also makes recruitment to Group ‘C’ Non-Technical and Group ‘B’ Non-gazetted Posts which are not covered by any of the Open Examinations conducted by the Commission. Such vacancies generally are small in number and qualification for such posts vary from department to department. Notice for Group’C’ posts is issued by the Regional Offices of the Commission and Notice for Group’B’ posts is issued by the Headquarters of the Commission.
